Fr. Philip Erasme, OMI, parish priest of Maryvale, was a strong advocate for Catholic education. Having been educated by the Jesuit Fathers in Grahamstown, he believed a Catholic school would help develop his parish. In 1939, he persuaded the Assumption Sisters to start a girls’ school, Assumption Convent, Maryvale. In 1943, concerned about the boys, he founded St. Paul’s Parochial School for boys. In 1990, the two schools merged to form Maryvale College, a co-educational institution.
Maryvale College is a small, dynamic Catholic school, excelling in academics with a 100% matric pass rate and a focus on developing each student’s character. While we engage in sports and extra-curricular activities, our true mission is to form students in the love of Christ, caring for each person as an individual. Our community is active in service, with initiatives such as prayer groups, Early Act (Young Rotary Club), peer counseling, and visits to eThembeni home for abandoned babies and Nazareth House.
